The Sheraton Kauai Resort is a combination of both a beachfront hotel and a timeshare resort. We’ve stayed here multiple times in each of the sections of the property and have found it to be a wonderful stay, quiet and fun. There are lots of choices for where to stay around Poipu or Koloa, but the Sheraton Kauai Resort has got us returning multiple times for some reason. The kids love it, so maybe that’s what’s bringing us back.
We’ve got the full scoop on what to expect when you’re staying at the Sheraton Kauai Resort, including the difference in the hotel side versus the villas (condos). And of course we always have lots of fun things to do near the property. If you have any questions either about the Sheraton Kauai Resort or visiting the South Shore of Kauai, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more.

Why Stay at the Sheraton Kauai Resort
Staying in the Poipu area of Koloa is wonderful. I like having such easy access to the beaches, there are great running routes, there is good food… The Sheraton Kauai Resort is a great option for having a nice hotel that’s on the beach AND that has lots of amenities. The location is amazing and the staff is nice.
What I really like about staying here is how flexible it makes a stay on the South Shore of Kauai. This is a very rainy island and the Sheraton Kauai Resort is set up to be fun even when it rains. Between nice public spaces and a solid calendar of activities that are great to take advantage of on a rainy day, it’s both a nice place to stay and its own comprehensive vacation plan all in one.

Room Options at the Sheraton Kauai Resort
Everyone likes to vacation differently and I think it’s important to consider what sort of accommodations are best for you and your travel partners when you’re making your budget. The Villas are part of a vacation exchange platform, so if you are able to book into them through Marriott Vacation Club or Interval International, you may be able to get one of the larger Villas for a great deal vs one of the resort hotel rooms for a higher nightly rate.
For general booking, you’ve got options for the following room types:
- Two queen beds
- King bed
- One bedroom suite (king or two queens w/ sofabed)
- Studio suite (king and sofabed)
- Two bedroom suite (at the Villas)
The maximum number of guests any room type can accommodate is 6 people. Differences in room types also come via their view type (garden or ocean). If you’re not planning a lot of time relaxing in your room staring at the ocean, book whatever is more budget friendly.
We had our pick of rooms and found that the one bedroom suite at the Villas was the best deal and most functional for our family of four. We love having lots of balcony space because we strategically plan downtime at the hotel when we travel as a way to break up our busy time. Balcony space with the one bedroom villa is great because we had two access points for outside, and it allowed us a quiet space away from the kids when we wanted it.

Sheraton Kauai Resort Amenities
While I always loves staying in quaint or vintage hotels, there’s something great about staying at a large resort with lots of amenities. Being able to return to a home base at the end of a long day of exploring and having everything you need at the ready is great. The Sheraton Kauai Resort has multiple swimming pools, two different fitness centers, organized activities, games, restaurants… It’s such a good resort for families, whether you’re staying on the hotel side or the Villas side.
The swimming pool at the Villas is quiet and it seems so rarely used. The pool on the hotel side has a waterfall and connected hot tub. It’s oceanfront, so it’s a popular place, but is still fun and great for kids when it’s at its busiest. And then there’s a swimmable beach right here too which is nice. I say swimmable because of the beaches on Kauai are pretty intense, but the beach at the Sheraton Kauai Resort can actually be enjoyed on a calm day.
I mentioned that there are two fitness centers. There’s one on the Villas side and one on the hotel side. They both are well equipped with free weights and machines, with cardio equipment and they have enough space for yoga and floor work.
Tip: if you like to run, there’s a great 5 mile running route from the Sheraton Kauai Resort over to the Spouting Horn. I love running here!

Dining at the Sheraton Kauai Resort and in Koloa
For our first stay at the Sheraton Kauai Resort we were in the Villas side so fully took advantage of our kitchen and only ate out for dinners, but for our second stay we were in a hotel unit and did dine on property and in Poipu / Koloa. Lava’s by the pool is great and I love the atmosphere. The menu is good and it’s very kid friendly. The Rum Fire is better, is way nicer and is a higher price point. It’s a good date night restaurant comparable to Tidepools over at the Grand Hyatt.
For dining we do prefer to go into Old Town Koloa or to Poipu Beach for more restaurant picks. Kenji Burger in Old Town has been one of my favorites for years, and then Brennecke’s on Poipu Beach is great. Our favorite though is Puka Dogs, but that’s a filled hotdog place, not a sit down dinner spot. You’ll find lots of options around town. Don’t worry!

Sheraton Kauai Resort Parking Information
Parking is free at the Sheraton Kauai Resort. It is self-park and there is plenty of space. Not all the walkways between buildings are covered, so on a rainy day you’ll get a little wet, but from the parking areas to the rooms, either at the Villas or hotel, the gardens are beautiful and you’ll even find fire pits lit in the evening. The ease of parking is great, especially in comparison to some hotels around Kauai that are very limited, such as the Kauai Shores Hotel in Kapaa. Valet parking is available at $30 USD per day if you think you need to use it, but parking is easy enough that I don’t think it’s worth it.

Activities and Sights Near the Sheraton Kauai Resort
I love staying in the Poipu area because it’s just a fun, energetic part of Kauai. People come here for the great beach park and neighborhood, and getting to stay nearby is fantastic. The Sheraton Kauai Resort is just minutes from Poipu Beach and many more things to do on the south shore of Kauai.
- have a beach day at Poipu Beach
- visit the Spouting Horn
- check out McBryde & Allerton National Tropical Botanical Garden
- day trip over to Hanapepe and Glass Beach
- go hiking at Waimea Canyon State Park
- day trip to the North Shore and Hanalei Bay

More Things to do on Kauai
Kauai is my second favorite island so I always have ideas for fun and beautiful things to do on Kauai. Because the island isn’t huge and there’s just the one road going around it (not even all the way), you can plan adventures on both the north and south shore in the same day as long as you allow yourself time to get between destinations. Here are our top picks for some of the best things to do on Kauai.
- Beach days at Poipu (south shore), Lydgate (east) or Hanalei (north)
- Smith’s Hawaii Wailua River Cruise – Lihue, east
- Kauai Coffee Co tour – near Hanapepe, south
- Waimea Canyon State Park – Waimea, south
- Na Pali Coast hiking at Haena State Park – Waineha, north
- Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge – Kilauea, north
There are, of course, many more things to do and so many beautiful hikes and beaches, but these are just our top picks that you can easily add to your Kauai itinerary to ensure you have an amazing experience here on the Garden Island.
Where to Stay on Kauai
There are three main areas to choose from when you’re planning your trip to Kauai. You can be on the east side (Lihue or Kapaa), the South Shore (Poipu, Koloa or Waimea) or on the North Shore (Princeville or Hanalei). I actually prefer to stay in Kapaa because it’s directly in the center. We’ve stayed all over though and it’s always easy to get around. The south shore is the most interesting with towns and epic sights, and then the east is most convenient with easy tourist activities and beaches, and then the north is much more rugged and is the start of the Na Pali Coast. Take your pick!
I hope you’ll consider spending a few nights at the Sheraton Kauai Resort. It’s one of the few hotels across the Hawaiian Islands that we’ve stayed at multiple times and we really enjoy it. If you have any other questions about the hotel or Kauai in general, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more and help you plan a beautiful Hawaii trip. Aloha!
