Getting to enjoy a Hawaiian luau is both fun and special. The Voyagers of the Pacific Luau at the Royal Kona Resort in Kailua-Kona is a great one and is perfect with kids. If you haven’t considered including a luau on your Big Island itinerary, you should add one, and the Voyagers of the Pacific is a great one. From the food to the dances, we can answer all your questions about the Voyagers luau.
Do you have a favorite luau when you come to Hawaii? We’ve gotten to do quite a few and have found that each is quite different. I like the combination of cultures on display in the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau, but there’s more to it that makes it a good choice. If you any additional questions or want to provide your own recommendations of a luau, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more!
Why Choose Voyagers of the Pacific Luau
We’ve been to several luaus across the islands and I really enjoyed how kid-friendly the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau was. By nature the luau experience is fun and lively, but sometimes they feel more formal. The vibe of the luau at the Royal Kona Resort is very low key, but still nice. It happens on the lawn beside the hotel, looking out across the ocean. The music is the right volume, meaning you can easily hear everything being said, spoken or sung but it’s not so loud that you’re unable to hear your own thoughts. I am really sensitive to this, so I think that’s important.
Something else that sets the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau apart from other shows we’ve been to is how inclusive of the many Polynesian nations it is Yes, there is a clear focus on the Hawaiian culture, history and stories, but dances and stories from Fiji, Tonga and more are all a part of the larger show. We all really enjoyed the experience of the dancing and singing, and the storytelling that goes along with the hula really helped the kids connect with the show. Bravo to this awesome cast of performers.
Tips for Enjoying the Luau at the Royal Kona Resort
Like with any experience that you don’t want to miss, you should always book it in advance if you can. We intentionally stayed at the Royal Kona Resort because we were going to the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau, but staying there doesn’t mean that you get to attend. You still need to book your tickets for the dinner show and it does sell out.
Like most luau experiences from here to the Moana Surfrider to Disney’s Ka Wa’a Luau at Aulani, the dinner service is a buffet with a wide variety of Hawaiian foods to try. There are also some simple standards available because the luau kitchen crew knows that there are picky eaters in the world. Also there is a bit of an open bar for the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau.
Servers are always circulating providing both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and then there is a walk up bar if you would like something else. Standard mixed drinks are included, but anything fancy/top shelf s additional. If you just want to enjoy the show without having to stand at the bar for a drink, just enjoy what’s provided in the cost of your ticket.
Being Prepared for the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau
You don’t need to bring much to the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau; just your appetite, your aloha shirt and your interest in the Hawaiian culture behind the luau experience. I do recommend a light jacket too though. It can get breezy just off the water, and even though it stays pretty warm, I always get a little cold being outside in the wind when it’s dark out.
If you do want to bring a camera also, you can get some great photos of the hula and fire dancers, as well as the musicians. They welcome the photography, both during and after the show. If you bring a large lens for close up shots, be courteous of others and do your photography from the side or between the tables without blocking others’ views of the stage. It’s easy to get swept up in getting cool photos, but be aware of yourself and getting in other people’s way.
Luau Parking at the Royal Kona Resort
Guests of the Royal Kona Resort don’t need to worry about additional parking instructions because you can just walk to the luau lawn from your room. If you’re not staying on property but are attending the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau, there is either paid parking or paid valet parking. For anyone staying in the main town area of Kailua-Kona, you can easily walk to the Royal Kona from town just along the seawall and Ali’i Drive. It’s about a fifteen minute walk from the King Kamehameha Hotel and Kamakahonu National Historic Site. If things are really busy at the resort and they’ve run out of parking for some reason, there is parking just a few minutes walk away at the edge of town, and sometimes you can find it on Ali’i Drive.

More Kona Coast Things to Do
The Kona Coast is one of my favorite areas in all of Hawaii. I love the different activities, from snorkeling with manta rays to daytime snorkel trips, experiencing Kona coffee culture to learning about historic Native Hawaiian culture. It’s always beautiful and no two visits are the same. Here are our top picks for things to do on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.
- tour some of the many Kona coffee farms and tasting rooms
- walk the seawall in Kailua-Kona and visit the Hulihe’e Palace
- snorkel at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area
- visit Kaloko Honkohau National Historic Park to see honu (sea turtles)
- do a nighttime snorkel with manta rays
- go to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park to see tikis and learn about Native Hawaiian culture
- hike at the Haulalai Volcano or Hawaii Volcanoes NP‘s Kahuku Unit
There are many more things to do when you’re putting together your Big Island itinerary, but when it comes to visiting the Kona Coast, these are some of our favorite things to do.
Where to Stay on the Kona Coast
The Kona Coast is big, stretching from Waimea at the north to Naalehu on the South Shore. You’ll find every sort of accommodation here from national travel brand hotels like Marriott and Holiday Inn Express to independent bed and breakfasts (the Ka’awa Loa Plantation is my favorite!), as well are larger resorts. We’ve enjoyed many different places but I really do like being near the town of Kailua-Kona because of the central location. Staying to the north is lovely because it’s so quiet and it’s all about the outdoor adventures. The southern end of the Kona Coast is full of coffee culture, lava flows and remote beaches you can hike to.
I hope you’ll consider doing the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau at the Royal Kona Resort. It’s one of the best ways to have fun at a luau and really shows off the beautiful world of Polynesian cultures. If you have any other questions about luaus or things to do on the Big Island, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more and help you plan a beautiful Hawaii trip. Aloha!
