Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort: Top Pick for a Kapaa, Kauai Stay

If you asked our kids what their favorite hotel they’ve ever stayed at is they would tell you it’s the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort. As an adult I really enjoy it, but when you visit with kids you’ll see what makes it so great. There are a lot of hotel and resort options on Kauai, and specifically in Kapaa, but this one stands out as a favorite. We’ve recommended it to friends often and several have stayed and enjoyed it too. And that’s why we’re sharing it here as well.

Highlights of Staying at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort

Whether I’m at home or I’m traveling I always love being up and active before and during sunrise. Staying at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort means that you are on the east side of Kauai and have an unobstructed view of the sunrise, either from your balcony (every room has one) or from the beach. It just ensures that you always start your day off right.

The other reason that we really like the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort is because it’s truly designed with families in mind. From the different sorts of lounge areas around the pool and at the beach to the open air game room, it’s a property that you can all do your own thing or enjoy together. Because of the layout, it was easy for us to enjoy the pool while the kids played pool (with cues and balls).

Also, each day there are family friendly activities around the pool area, such as snow cones (it’s not shaved ice) in the afternoon and s’mores at night. It’s so easy to enjoy being here all day or returning to relax after a day of hiking. I like the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort for being able to plan a diverse sort of trip to Kauai.

Room Options at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort

As is the case in most hotels these days, the room types at the Sheraton Coconut Beach are mostly broken up by what type of view they have. So yes, you can choose between two queens or a king bed for the setup, but then the room rate will be reflective of the view you’ve chosen. Here’s what you can pick from:

  • Garden View – nice, quiet, nothing to complain about
  • Coconut Grove View – there are a TON of conures (small parrots) that get loud each night, but it’s really cool
  • Pool View – I like the pool view because I can spy on my family if I’ve stayed behind from the poo
  • Ocean View – always a winner, and the hotel get’s an unobstructed sunrise

All rooms have balconies, so whatever you choose you’ll have nice, albeit small, outdoor space to relax at the end of the day once you’ve put kids to bed. This separate space is a hotel requirement for us whenever it’s available.

There’s a deluxe version of both the king and queen rooms that is very similar in terms of decor and in-room amenities, but they are all oceanfront and are nearly twice the square footage of the standard rooms. If you need a rollaway or just want more space, this is a good pick.

There are also one bedroom suites here at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort. The suites are quite large with the king bedroom, nice living room with a sleeper sofa, good size dining area and kitchenette. Also, with large balconies off the bedroom and living room, you can easily have time apart while still at your room

Sheraton Coconut Beach Amenities

Of course having a swimming pool is always nice, especially if you like to swim in the morning before everyone is set up for a pool day, but what makes the swimming pool at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort so nice is the size and many levels of the pool. You can hang out in the deeper area, the ledge, the middle section or the shallow kid zone. It’s an ideal swimming pool situation for any resort, but it’s really perfect for families vacationing on Kauai.

The other big highlight of an amenity (you might say) is the beach access here at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort. Located just down the sand from the Kauai Shores Hotel, the beach here is actually a great one to enjoy with kids. It stretches around the property so has a variety of wave breaks. The best part of it though is the snorkeling area. It’s very shallow, but is wonderful for snorkeling and absolutely full of wildlife. I love it here.

Other amenities on property include a fitness center (pretty good), a resort shop, free bike rentals and yard games. For being such a low key resort, it has everything you hope for at a much fancier place.

Dining at the Coconut Beach Resort

There are actually four dining options on property at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort. There is a nicer restaurant, Moa Moa, which is open for all meals; and then there is the pool bar, the Crooked Surf, which is open for lunch and dinner (and drinks); the Fire Hen (table service in the arcade/gaming space) for low key bar-type food; and then there is a small coffee shop off the lobby, First Light Coffee.

The best thing we ate on property, and we had several meals at the hotel, was actually the ube pancakes from the kids menu at Moa Moa. Wow! Purple pancakes would be a hit with the kids, of course, but we adults ended up getting them too. Fluffy but still very ube-forward with white chocolate sauce and macadamia nuts. Even though they’re decadent and seem like dessert, it’s such a great mix of several Hawaiian food products.

Also, the whole setup at the Fire Hen is pretty great. The arcade itself has great games and then there are plenty of tables for taking breaks together and having a chill meal together. Our kids never got bored of any of the game room activities, so staying here for several days meant that we had multiple meals here.

Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort Parking Information

When you’re vacationing on Kauai, you’ll find that things are quiet costly, and I might even say more so here than on the Big Island of Hawai’i. With that, parking is included with your stay so that’s nice that it’s not an added cost. Valet parking is $20 per day if you want it, but the parking area is large and spaces are plentiful so it’s an easy set up.

These are our top 10 picks for things to do in and around Kapaa, starting with what’s closest to the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort and getting gradually more distant.

More Things to do on Kauai

Kauai is my second favorite island so I always have ideas for fun and beautiful things to do on Kauai. Because the island isn’t huge and there’s just the one road going around it (not even all the way), you can plan adventures on both the north and south shore in the same day as long as you allow yourself time to get between destinations. Here are our top picks for some of the best things to do on Kauai.

There are, of course, many more things to do and so many beautiful hikes and beaches, but these are just our top picks that you can easily add to your Kauai itinerary to ensure you have an amazing experience here on the Garden Island.

Where to Stay on Kauai

There are three main areas to choose from when you’re planning your trip to Kauai. You can be on the east side (Lihue or Kapaa), the South Shore (Poipu, Koloa or Waimea) or on the North Shore (Princeville or Hanalei). I actually prefer to stay in Kapaa because it’s directly in the center. We’ve stayed all over though and it’s always easy to get around. The south shore is the most interesting with towns and epic sights, and then the east is most convenient with easy tourist activities and beaches, and then the north is much more rugged and is the start of the Na Pali Coast. Take your pick!

Here are some of the places we’ve enjoyed around Kauai:

I hope you’ll consider booking a stay at the Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort in Kapa’a. It’s really a great resort hotel, and if you’re visiting without kids, you’ll enjoy it just as much because it’s so well put together. If you have any other questions about staying here or enjoying Kauai, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re always happy to share more and help you plan a beautiful Hawaii trip. Aloha!
